Description
Allamanda Cathartica – The Golden Trumpet Flower
This evergreen plant is characterized by its glossy, leathery leaves arranged in whorls of 3 to 5, and its vibrant, golden-yellow blooms that appear in abundance from spring through late fall. Each flower is about 3–5 inches in diameter, shaped like a trumpet, and often lightly fragrant, attracting butterflies and pollinators. The cheerful color and abundant flowering make it a standout addition to any tropical-themed garden or courtyard.
Allamanda cathartica grows best in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. It needs regular watering, especially during hot seasons, but should not be overwatered, as this can lead to root rot. In frost-free climates, it can be grown as a perennial, climbing over structures or spreading along the ground. In cooler regions, it can be grown in containers and moved indoors during the winter.
Though beautiful, Allamanda should be handled with care. The plant’s sap is mildly toxic and can cause skin irritation or digestive issues if ingested, so it’s important to keep it away from pets and children. Interestingly, the plant was historically used for its purgative (cathartic) properties—hence the name cathartica—but it is not recommended for medicinal use today due to its potency.
In landscape design, Allamanda is often used to create vibrant backdrops, cover pergolas, or decorate balconies. When trained on trellises or fences, it can form a lush floral screen. With regular pruning, it can also be shaped as a bush or used in mixed borders for a splash of tropical color.
