Description
Dracaena fragrans
One of the most appealing qualities of Dracaena fragrans is its ease of care. It is a slow-growing plant that can reach up to 6 feet or more indoors, but its growth is easily managed through pruning. The plant typically grows from thick canes or stalks, giving it a structural, architectural look. Some varieties, such as Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana’, have yellow stripes running down the center of the leaves, adding extra visual interest.
Light is an important factor in the plant’s health. Dracaena fragrans does best in bright, indirect sunlight, although it can tolerate low light conditions. However, too much direct sun may cause the leaves to scorch, while too little light can slow growth and fade leaf coloration. For best results, place the plant near a window with filtered light.
Watering should be done with care. Dracaena fragrans prefers soil that is kept lightly moist, but not soggy. Allow the top inch of the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is a common issue and can lead to root rot. It is also sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, which may cause leaf tips to turn brown. Using filtered or distilled water can help prevent this.
The plant thrives in average indoor temperatures between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). It can tolerate slightly cooler or warmer conditions but should be protected from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Dracaena fragrans also appreciates moderate humidity levels. If indoor air is very dry, especially in winter, occasional misting or a nearby humidifier can be beneficial.
