Description

Appearance and Growth

Ficus Robusta features thick, oval-shaped leaves that are deep green and leathery in texture. These leaves can grow up to 30 cm long, giving the plant a bold, tropical look. The plant grows in an upright, tree-like form and can reach heights of up to 2–3 meters indoors, and much taller in outdoor tropical environments. Its glossy leaves and architectural shape make it a statement piece in modern interiors and garden landscapes.

Light and Temperature Requirements

This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight, although it can tolerate some degree of low light. However, for the healthiest and fastest growth, bright filtered light is ideal. Direct sunlight may cause leaf scorching, especially in hotter climates. Ficus Robusta prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 25°C, and does not tolerate frost. It should be protected from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

Watering and Soil

Ficus Robusta likes its soil to be consistently moist, but not soggy. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf drop. A well-draining potting mix, ideally containing peat, perlite, and pine bark, helps support healthy root development. When grown outdoors, ensure the soil is rich, well-aerated, and drains efficiently.

Care and Maintenance

Rubber plants are generally low-maintenance. Occasional leaf cleaning helps maintain the plant’s attractive shine and prevents dust buildup, which can reduce photosynthesis. Pruning can be done to control size and shape, especially in indoor environments. It’s also recommended to repot the plant every 2–3 years to refresh the soil and encourage growth.

Benefits

Ficus Robusta is not only decorative but also helps purify indoor air, as confirmed by NASA’s Clean Air Study. It can remove pollutants like formaldehyde, making it both a beautiful and health-promoting addition to indoor environments.
